Mafikeng Hospital
new hospital typology for a semi arid town
location: mafikeng , north west, south africa
he wards of this 160 bed Private hospital are broken up to form a public arcade in the shape of a cross, centralising the core activities around a light filled environment. Evoking a sense of being outside and in nature. Supporting this idea, the roof is conceived like a canopy of a tree, where users can find a gardened relief on the roof. Each of the wards have their own secure courtyards, given them a sense of place and identity. This hospital takes a sustainable approach to its design, with an underlying ethos that architecture nurtures.
